Update: Nachdem Mozilla kurz nach diesem Post Firefox 6 veröffentlicht hatte und ich es leid bin, das Plugin immer wieder anzupassen, habe ich die maximale Version im Plugin nun auf *.*.* gesetzt, was erst mal eine Weile Ruhe bedeuten dürfte.

FlashTracer is a amazing plugin for Firefox, which displays the contents of the flashlog.txt in the sidebar. Unfortunately the author didn’t mark the plugin as compatible with Firefox 4 and 5 yet, so that it’s impossible to install it the usual way. However there are some alternatives:

• Flashbug shows flashlog.txt in Firebug – but in my oppinion it’s unusable: After page refresh and even after something was traced, you have to scroll down manually to see the message and there’s also no way to clear the log
  
• Flash Tracer for Firebug also pretends to display flashlog.txt in Firebug but doesn’t with current Firefox and Firebug versions
• Vizzy Flash Tracer is a nice Log Viewer for flashlogs. Though usage is unpractical, because it is a standalone application and so you always have to switch between Flash Builder, Firefox and Vizzy windows or arrange them artfully.
• Eclipse Log Viewer also is a nice Log Viewer, which integrates as View in Eclipse. Usage is also complicated with this, because you have to switch between Firefox- und Flash Builder.

So there are some ways – for Air applications Vizzy and Eclipse Log Viewer surely are good solutions and the latter is also great to display other log files (eg. PHP error log, MySQL slow query log…). Though with none of them it’s possible to view the application/movie and it’s trace output at the same time in the same window which however is essential for most use cases. So longing for the good old FlashTracer-Plugin got bigger – so big that i finally grabbed the original plugin and modified/replaced the install.rdf and so made it installable again. The “new” plugin has another ID and isn’t bound to the original update site, so that it is quasi independent.
